Barry Gowdy has 30+ years experience in fishing for Salmon and Dollaghan. He is also a dedicated member of the ZPEY Pro Team UK & Ireland. Barry was born and bred in Doagh, Co Antrim where he learned his tread on the upper stretches of the Six Mile Water. As a boy he fished the Doagh Burn, a feeder tributary for the Six Mile Water where he met the late "Willie Gilmore” (One of the local “aul hands”). Barry spent most of his teenage years learning to fly fish and learning how to read the river alongside his mentor and friend, Willie. He later began to find his own way in his much loved fly fishing. Barry loves to fish all over Ireland, especially fishing for salmon on The Mourne, The Finn and The Bush to name just a few, but as Barry says “None come close to the magic of fishing for the Dollaghan on the Six Mile Water.” If you would like to be guided by Barry please email the link above. Check out these great pictures of some of the folks and fish that Barry has guided.

I booked Barry on a few occasions as I had just taken up fly fishing after a few years of taking a break and I had been struggling to get fish on my local river the Six Mile Water. My first outing with Barry was during daylight, just after a flood and he took me to the upper end of the river and showed me what fly’s to use and what way to fish with them. We weren’t even on the river for much more than half an hour and I had my first dollaghan to the net. My fish was around 3lbs. After that, the fish just kept coming and I ended up with a load of fish with the largest being about 4lbs. After being out with Barry I was totally hooked again. So I re-booked Barry for an after-hours ticket for night fishing for the dollaghan, which turned out to be very productive which reward. My largest fish of the year was a fish at 5lbs. I was very impressed with Barry’s knowledge of the river and would highly recommend him as a guide to anyone.

I got in touch with Barry via the A&DAA Facebook page. I thought guided fishing was a bit of a luxury, but I learnt more in an evening with Barry than my previous years on the River; cheaper than yet another fishing rod, I didn’t need.
He had scouted out the best holding pools during the day, ensuring we were on the fish that evening. We went to the top of the river and followed it down – fishing flies that he had hand tied.
My enduring memory was the absolute enthusiasm that Barry showed when I got into my first fish. He scrambled down the bank to get it netted and his grin was almost as big as mine when it was landed for the obligatory photograph, before being safely returned. As I remember, it was on a goats toe fly.
More Dollaghan followed. Barry is a gentleman and his experience on the Six Mile River is hard gained. Many thanks for a memorable evening.
